FamilyLife Resurrection Eggs

These Resurrection Eggs are a great way to teach children about Jesus and the meaning of Easter. They clearly communicate the last week of the life of Christ. They contain 12 colored plastic eggs. Each egg holds one item, illustrating a part of Holy Week: donkey, coins, cup, praying hands, leather, crown, nails, a die, spear, linen stone and an empty egg.

It is fun for everyone to try to remember the reason why each item is in an egg. We use these in our own home and with groups of children.

John Lee Hooker Jr.
Born in Detroit, John Lee Hooker, Jr., is the son of blues legend John Lee Hooker. The family blues pedigree took hold early, and Hooker was performing live on Detroit's WJBK radio station when he was only eight years old, and by his teens he was touring with his father. At 18, he was a featured vocalist on Hooker, Sr.'s Live at Soledad Prison album and the future looked bright for the young musician, but drug and alcohol problems derailed things for some 25 years until family and friends helped Hooker through his problems and he emerged healthier, wiser, and ready to resume his career.

Sherman Robertson
Guitarist, singer and songwriter Sherman Robertson is a product of the region of the country that he grew up in: he's one part zydeco, one part swamp blues, one part electric blues and one part classic rhythm and blues. His guitar playing style is extremely rhythm-based, but at the same time, he plays some extraordinary slide guitar and in the course of one of his typical three hour shows, he'll play a lot of great solos. Robertson's rhythmic playing is no doubt an outgrowth of his several years on the road in the 1980s with the king of zydeco, Clifton Chenier.

Peter Cincotti
Singer-songwriter Peter Cincotti is jazz-influenced pianist and vocalist with a bent toward adult-alternative pop and '70s influenced rock. Born in the Park Avenue apartment of his parents, Cincotti displayed a talent for music after being given a toy piano by his grandmother at age three, and when he was four he began taking piano lessons.

Kyle Eastwood
The son of legendary actor Clint Eastwood, bassist Kyle Eastwood inherited his father's well-known love of jazz music, becoming a respected session player during the early '90s; later fronting his own quartet, he contributed a track to the 1997 Eastwood After Hours: Live at Carnegie Hall tribute LP, and a year later issued his solo debut, From There to Here. Chucho Valdes
Nationality: Cuban
Born: Oct 9 1941 (68 years old)
The son of the noted musician Bebo Valdes, Chucho began playing piano when he was three and by the time he was 16 he was leading his own group. In 1960 his father defected from Cuba but Chucho stayed behind. In 1967, he formed the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna and, in 1973, he founded Irakere, the top Cuban jazz orchestra; among its original members were Arturo Sandoval and Paquito D'Rivera. Valdes has been Irakere's musical director almost from the start and has recorded with the full band, in small groups, and as an impressive solo pianist.

Milow
Jonathan Vandenbroeck is the 27 year-old Belgian singer-songwriter, otherwise known as Milow. This last year has seen Milow have enormous chart success right across Europe with his version of 50 Cent's 'Ayo Technology'. In 2008 it was time for Milow’s career to skyrocket. It began when a Belgian radio station asked Milow to play a cover song as part of a live session. Milow opted for ‘Ayo Technology’, an acoustic guitar cover version of 50 Cent’s original 2007 hit which featured Justin Timberlake. And it worked, to striking, creepy effect. Milow’s everyman yearning and the eerie desperation in his vocals and acoustic-guitar interpretation of the track work incredibly and ingeniously, especially considering its total transformation.

Waterproof Camera Case

We were so excited to have this DiCAPac Waterproof Case for underwater camera use. It arrived in the mail yesterday. We went to the beach to snorkel and take some diving photos with the case on our Olympus 710.

In this photo, I'm performing the required test, before first use.

It was a the roughest water we have ever seen at the beach. The muck was all stirred up, so it was impossible to see the fish. These Tunisian surfers made the most of the waves.

This guy caught a wave right in front of me. I took the photo just as the wave broke over my head. Fun!

Josh wanted to rent a surfboard and join them.

Our fisherman friend was there with his two young children. They swam while he fished. He'd go out a ways to cast, then return to shore to wait for the fish to bite. He caught about ten 5 inch fish.

Brain Dump Exercise for Fall

I don’t know about you, but I always get off track this time of year. I start every year with a bright spark of inspiration and a list of things to do. Spring arrives just in time to plant the seeds of my goals. Summer brings a burst of growth with its heat. But in the fall, my enthusiasm starts to wane. Some years, I’ve limped to the end of the year and hoped that New Years promise would spark my enthusiasm.

A few years ago, I started using a technique I call the “Brain Dump”. By dumping out my worries and thoughts, I can redirect my energy toward my goals. I am also able to determine what I need to accomplish by the end of the year. Sounds good right?.

Here’s how you do it:

1. Materials needed: Start by getting a pad of paper and a pencil or pen that is easy to write with. You will be working fast. I tend to use a pen and paper over my computer.

2. Block out an hour of uninterrupted time: The entire thing takes about an hour. If that’s impossible try to accomplish each task in an uninterrupted time. I’ve done one thing at a time over several days when I simply don’t have the time.

3. Create a master To Do list. I collect all the tiny pieces of paper, lists on back of receipts as well as my main To Do list. Once I’ve transferred all of these items to a single list, I add all the things I’ve thought about doing. I search out the deep recesses of my mind for anything that’s ever occurred to me to do. Knowing that I can cross out anything later, I dump all my to Do’s into list form. When I finish, I give myself a few minutes to see if anything else occurs to me.

4. Create a list of what you desire. If you want an expensive car, put it down. If you want to go on a nice vacation to a foreign country, put it down. My desire to live in Paris for the month of March comes up year after year. Some day, it will be a reality. For now, it goes on this list.

5. Create a list of what you fear. Everyone fears something. Some people fear a lot of things. This list can be hard and painful. Be brave. Fear is a feeling. Pretending it doesn’t exist will not make it go away. Breathe and write.

6. Congratulations! You’ve done most of the hard work! Pat yourself on the back. If you’re out of time, set aside your lists. If you have another half hour or so, now we start to work with your lists.

7. Glance over all three of your lists:

a. What moves you? What motivates you? What strikes an inner nerve? Underline these items.

b. Who are you doing this for? Cross off anything you are doing to please someone else.

c. Read all of your entries out loud. Ok, I almost never do this. But it’s a good idea. Try it. If it works, keep it. If not, don’t bother.

d. Add any new thoughts that come up.

8. Review your fear list with an eye for solutions: What can you do to alleviate these fears? You don’t need to live in fear. Think through real solutions and add them to your To Do list.

9. Review your desire list: You can have the life you desire. You must decide where to focus your limited time and energy. Solutions usually involve making more money. How will you make more money? Who will help you learn money management? Add your action items to your To Do list.

10. Your ‘To Do’ List: Most people are really overwhelmed by the depth and length of this list. Take a breath. Let’s sort this list out:

a. Remember those items you underlined? These may represent unnoticed passions. Create a section of your list for passions.

b. Separate out long-term goals from short-term goals. Break your long term goals up into steps by asking ‘what is one step I could take that would bring this into my life?’

c. I tend to separate items into self (working out, meditation, prayer), household (laundry, marketing), writing (novels, serial fiction) and business.

Congratulations! You have created your Master To Do list: This is a living breathing document. But the power of this process is in the day to day use of your lists. From your master list, create a weekly ‘To Do’ list with short term. Every day, pick out the three most important things for you to do in that day. Slowly but surely, you will work your way through your list – three small items at a time.

But now Hillary has won the popular vote in a Democratic primary, while Obambi has won under the rules. In a spectacular turnabout, media commentators are heaping sarcasm on our plucky Hillary for imagining the "popular vote" has any relevance whatsoever.

It's hard to tell the difference, they were wearing camouflage clothes and were carrying machine guns. This fellow that stopped me was insisting that I had to give him a "gift." I replied that I don't give money, but Scripture booklets to police or soldiers on the side of the road. He asked me why I was giving him the Scripture. I replied, "Because I love you. I gave up my comfortable life in the United States of America to come here and share the Word of God, which is more valuable than money."

Researcher relates the idea of self-control to a muscle that becomes more exhausted the more you use it, and his studies “all pointed toward the conclusion that the first self-control task consumed and depleted some kind of psychological resource that was therefore less available to help performance on the second self-control task.”

A recent study by University of Kentucky psychologists Suzanne Segerstrom and Lise Solberg Nes supports this idea that controlling your emotions is hard work. They had participants either eat from a plate of cookies and chocolates while avoiding a plate of carrots or eat from the plate of carrots while avoiding the sweets. The heart rate variability of the participants who had to use their self control and avoid the tempting sweets (they even made the cookies warm and freshly baked) was higher than it was in those who didn’t have to avoid that temptation. Then, all the participants were asked to work on difficult, or even impossible, anagrams.

The participants who had used up their self-control by avoiding the cookies and chocolates were less determined to finish the impossible anagrams.

“People are aware that they are sometimes vulnerable to saying the wrong thing, eating the wrong thing, or doing the wrong thing, but they may be unaware of their own self-regulatory capacity at any given time,” Segerstrom and Solberg Nes write.

A Daniel Diet or Fast can last from just a few days to a life-time. It is a healthy way to eat. It will encourage you to focus on spiritual things throughout the day.

Grenade kills 7 children in Ivory Coast

BONDOUKOU, Ivory Coast, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Seven children were killed outside a school in Ivory Coast Wednesday when one of them removed a pin from a grenade he found nearby and it exploded.

Another boy turned over a second grenade to his father, who gave it to police, the South African online news agency News 24 reported.

Clement Assi,, a local health worker, told News 24 seven more children were wounded, two seriously, in the blast in Bondoukou, located about 285 miles from Abidjan in northeastern Ivory Coast. The victims were between 4 and 15 years old, Assi said.

The West African state has been divided and there has been sporadic fighting since a 2002-2003 civil war.

"We're in a zone which isn't far from the front line. With the war, weapons were moved around but we don't know how these grenades got here," said Richard Secre, chairman of Bondoukou's local council.

Celebrating the Nativity in Abidjan

It was a blessing to celebrate our Christmas Eve tradition with some of our friends last night. Today was filled with cooking, eating and a gift exchange with fellow missionaries here in our neighborhood. Another of our friends came this evening to give a gift to Joshua and share our Christmas leftovers. Then I cut a chocolate cake into about 20 pieces and shared them as Jesus' birthday cake with all the men guarding the houses on our street.

Heavenly Father, use our simple acts of love and friendship to open hearts to Your extreme acts of love and generosity in Jesus Christ's nativity, death and resurrection.

Ministry to the police, Tabaski

Some of our ministry highlights this week were with police. You might wonder why the police constantly pull us over. Our police here are standing on the side of our busy streets. They pull cars over to check the insurance and inspection papers. Usually they see our mission signs and wave us on. This week Sue and I separately were pulled over and had the officers ask us for Bibles. We both saw very happy faces as we handed them New Testaments. They promised to attend church on Sunday.

Tomorrow is The Big Feast, (Eid al-Adha), "The Feast of Sacrifice" (Kurban Bayram), also known as Tabaski in West Africa. Animals are slaughtered to commemorate Abraham's sacrificing of a ram instead of his son as recorded in the Qur'an and the Bible. Those who are able make a pilgrimage to Mecca do so just before this date, on the Hajj.

Heavenly Father, thanks you that Mike and Sue were able to bless these policemen with New Testaments. Help these men to read your word and trust in Christ for salvation. Open the hearts of the 1 billion or more Muslims around the world who will remember Abraham's sacrifice. Open their minds to understand that Jesus is the Lamb that God provided to be the sacrifice for our sins.

Jesus' Nativity in Abidjan

This year, Christmas is even more beautiful in Abidjan than ever before. Sue says she's never seen such a beautiful Nativity Scene even in the USA. It is located at the Prima shopping center. It is constructed with full size characters. There are several other Nativity scenes at other stores.

Praise you Heavenly Father that even Muslim stores are proudly displaying the Nativity scene. Use these displays in Abidjan to open hearts to trust in Christ alone for salvation.

Joshua is doing much better

Your prayers really made a difference! Wednesday was still a little rough for Joshua. Thursday, he was feeling much better. He even rode his bike over to his friend Caleb's house, 3 blocks away. Unfortunately, that was a bit too much too soon. Friday, Joshua was limping around the house, barely able to walk, his legs were so sore. We're not sure what sore legs have to do with Malaria. Since Sunday, I, Mike, have been under the weather with a runny nose. Last night we drove Diana, one of our Lebanese friends, to the emergency room. She's now in intensive care.

Heavenly Father, we're amazed at Your healing power. We ask You to reach out to Diana and heal her heart. Take away this weakness that has plagued her for several years. Help her to see Your loving provision.

Joshua has Malaria

We do all we can to avoid Malaria, including daily and weekly medicine and avoiding being outdoors from sunset to sunrise. On occasion that isn't enough. This morning Joshua woke up with a severe headache and a temperature. By 9:30 he was already on a Malaria cure. It was a difficult day with screams of agony interposed with retching. Joshua is now sleeping fitfully.

Heavenly Father, We ask You to touch Joshua's body with Jour healing hand. Destroy these dangerous parasites that are battling against his body. Give him a healthy day tomorrow.

Youssef's cancer is dead

Youssef knows God answered your prayers! The missionary doctor in Ghana was able to remove 25% of his cancer. The very strange thing is that all the cancer cells are dead. How could lung cancer, that appeared since last year's physical, now be dead? God answered your prayers!

Before Youssef went to Ghana last week, one of his younger friends teased him saying, "You're in great health. I'll die before you will." That man died of a brain aneurysm a few days later, without Christ.

Heavenly Father we thank you for healing Youssef. Help him as he continues treatments to remove the dead cancer cells over the next two months. Comfort this grieving family that lost their husband and father.

Rabiya died yesterday in Burkina Faso

Thanks to your prayers, Rabiya died in his mother's arms. She is 85 years old and gets about in a wheelchair. This evening I prayed with Youssef, before he flew to Ghana for his cancer treatments. He will have four days of treatments, each lasting from 3 to 5 hours. They will attempt to remove the cancer with an oral probe equipped with a camera and a laser.

Joshua and I just got home from watching yesterday's Steelers vs Ravens football game on videotape with some other missionary guys. Sue was at her missionary women's Bible study across the street.

Heavenly Father, protect Youssef as he travels. Use the missionary doctor to heal his lung cancer, or even to find it is already healed!
